The Arizona Snowbowl resort becomes the staging ground for one of the American Cancer Society’s most inspiring fundraising events as hundreds of participants gather for the annual Climb to Conquer Cancer. This challenging yet accessible 5-mile trek up Snowbowl Road tests physical endurance while honoring cancer survivors, remembering those lost to the disease, and raising crucial funds for research and patient support. The event transforms a scenic mountain road into a pathway of hope, where every step represents determination to conquer cancer through community action and scientific advancement.
The Challenge
Starting at 7,150 feet elevation at the base of Snowbowl Road, participants face a steady 2,200-foot climb through ponderosa pine forest to reach Arizona Snowbowl ski resort at over 9,300 feet. The winding asphalt road challenges even seasoned hikers with its sustained grade and high altitude, but the spectacular views of the San Francisco Peaks and surrounding Coconino National Forest provide inspiration throughout the journey. Water stations staffed by volunteers appear regularly along the route, offering hydration, snacks, and encouragement from local businesses and radio stations that sponsor rest stops.
Participants and Community
The event attracts diverse participants united by their connection to cancer—survivors celebrating their strength, family members honoring loved ones, medical professionals supporting their patients, and community members demonstrating solidarity. Teams form around workplaces, families, friend groups, and organizations, with groups of 12 or more eligible to customize their event t-shirts with personalized logos or messages. The non-competitive atmosphere encourages participation regardless of fitness level, with some participants walking the entire distance while others challenge themselves to complete the climb more quickly.

Registration includes the signature event t-shirt in the year’s designated color, plus a lunch ticket for the post-climb celebration at Hart Prairie Lodge.
