It is a self contained community located approximately 10 miles west of downtown Phoenix in the West Valley. The Hohokam Indians once inhabited the area that is now Tolleson. These early settlements date back to the 14th century. However, it wasn’t until 1912 before the area started to grow. It was in this year that W.G. Tolleson arrived and the town received its name. W.G. Tolleson built a ranch and later enticed people from Phoenix to come out and purchase land. Today, the town remains a close-knit community. Agriculture has always played a big role in the town and it continues to benefit the city today. However, other businesses have come to the area. Situated near several highways and the mainline Southern Pacific Railroad, the city offers an ideal location for new businesses and companies. Many warehouses/shipping facilities have sprung up. Tolleson has a strong commercial and industrial base. Tolleson Entertainment Tolleson is known for being a community with friendly people. There a wide range of community facilities available in the city. A community center, library, and several parks offer recreational activities for all residents. The city is developing new city government buildings with a green design focus. These facilities will be energy efficient. Recycled materials, solar power, and water conservation are some of the technologies that will be implemented in the city facilities design. Tolleson’s goal is to meet high standards, yet be environmentally friendly.
Tolleson is in Central Arizona . It is in Maricopa County. The town is located 11 miles west of Phoenix in the West Valley. It covers 6 square miles. Then in 1915, Tolleson enticed individuals from Phoenix to come out and see the land. He chartered a train for a one-day promotional land sale. The sale produced 80 sold lots at $50.00 a piece. Tolleson did throw in a $5.00 gold piece as a rebate for those who made a land purchase.
Since then, the town was incorporated in 1929 and has remained a close-knit community. There are many single-family homes, which share in the small town feeling that Tolleson represents. Tolleson was the first city in Arizona to have all paved streets.
