History:
In 1879, the Willard Lee family arrived in the area that is now known as Greer. They named the site Lee Valley. Then in 1898, a post office was established and the name was changed.
There are two stories for how the town's name came to be. One is that Americus Vespucius Greer was a leading Mormon citizen at the time and the town's name was chosen to honor him. The other came from a family raising cattle that lived in town. The name Greer came from Mrs. Ellen Greer, who was a member of the family.
Greer is a very small town that enjoys its tourist season all year round. A wide variety of outdoor activities are available near Greer, which is surrounded by tall pines, rivers and lakes.
