Ahwatukee is a residential community that is located in Southern Phoenix. It is part of East Valley and was established as a neighborhood in 1970. It’s northern and part of its western border is located within the South Mountain Park and Preserve. Its eastern and southern border touch Interstate 10 and Highway 202, respectively.

The first homes in the community became available for sale in 1971. In the 1980s, Phoenix annexed Ahwatukee. The community now has numerous features for residents including many and private schools as well as its own bus route.

The community of Ahwatukee also offers numerous amenities to homeowners who live there. It has its own shopping district full of shops that sell everything from apparel and housewares to gourmet food. There are also several restaurants located within the community, and Ahwatukee hosts a farmer’s market every year.

Because of its proximity to the South Mountain Park and Preserve, its residents have access to trails for hiking, biking, and walking. Within the community of Ahwatukee, residents also have access to sporting facilities, including a number of courts for basketball, tennis, and volleyball.

Ahwatukee has one of the hottest real estates in the Greater Phoenix area. Homes in this residential neighborhood sell for around $360,000, or $188 per square foot. This price is markedly higher than the overall Phoenix average of $269,000 for a house.

Homes in the Ahwatukee community have risen by 6.8 percent in the last year. Prices are expected to rise progressively as newcomers arrive in the Phoenix area and the demand for new housing increases.

The real estate market in Ahwatukee features a combination of single-family homes, townhouses and condominiums for sale. The typical condo in this community sells for as little as $149,000 and as high as $215,000. It has one or two bedrooms as well as at least one bathroom. The average condo here has around 800 square feet of space.

Townhouses are also available for sale in Ahwatukee. These homes have two to three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and up to 2000 square feet. Some also have additional features like attached one or two-car garages.

Single-family homes in Ahwatukee vary in size from modest two-bedroom homes with one bathroom to larger homes with three and four bedrooms. The average square feet of space is around 2200, if not more.

Master-planned developments, a desert setting, sprinkled with golf courses, and lakes make up Ahwatukee (pronounced Ah-wah-too-key) Village. The name Ahwatukee in the Native American Crow language means House of Dreams or Magic Place of My Dreams. The name today symbolizes what Ahwatukee Village is to its residents. There are individuals who refer to the area as Ahwatukee Foothills.

Many families and commuters enjoy Ahwatukee Villages’ proximity to other parts of the Valley of the Sun. Being close to the East Valley and downtown Phoenix makes it easy to get around. Retirees are also drawn to the master-planned communities with a selection of floor plans and prices. These communities also provide special amenities such as tennis and golf. Properties range from townhouses and patio new homes to custom new homes, mansions, and large estates. Some master-planned communities offer community centers with recreational and community activities. Many people have found education is a priority in Ahwatukee Village. Outstanding elementary and high schools in Ahwatukee and Ahwatukee State University in Tempe, only a stones-throw away from the community, make this village a popular place to live. Accessibility to other parts of the Valley of the Sun is done by way of Interstate 10 to the east. Both Tempe and Chandler are in close proximity to Ahwatukee. Retail and commercial businesses are located in and around the surrounding area. This makes it easy for residents to shop. As predicted growth continues, future roadway construction will take place making it even easier for residents.

Ahwatukee Outdoor Recreation

Looming above and to the north of Ahwatukee Village, stretching the length of the village’s northern border is South Mountain. This spectacular desert mountain gives any resident in the area terrific views. South Mountain is a park that encompasses over 16,000 acres. A cactus-studded mountain range with a blue sky background is one of the perks to living in this village. More than forty miles of trails are available for hiking, biking, and walking. Outdoor recreation is part of living in Ahwatukee Village.

Ahwatukee Village is a special place. Outdoor recreation plays a large role in this community. Taking time to get out and share with others the outdoors through golf, hiking, or biking creates a friendly atmosphere that makes up Ahwatukee.

Ahwatukee History

Several new home real estate development companies came together in the 1970s and purchased land at the south and eastern base of South Mountain. Originally this land was owned by the Ames family they built their new home in Ahwatukee in the 1920s and called it Ahwatukee Ranch.

Ahwatukee Village Location

the borders of Ahwatukee Village are Interstate 10 to the east, Gila River Indian Community on the south, Gila River Indian Community/Pecos Road to the west, and South Mountain to the north. This area is sometimes referred to as Ahwatukee Foothills.

Ahwatukee Foothills
