    Wickenburg is located alongside the Hassayampa River, which means “river that flows upside down.” The Native Americans living in the area gave the river its name, due to the fact that the river actually flows 20 feet below the surface for most of its 100 mile course through the desert, including parts of Wickenburg.     Wickenburg History

    the town's history began back in 1863. Henry Wickenburg, a German immigrant came to the area and discovered gold. This discovery eventually became the Vulture Mine, the most profitable gold and silver mine in Arizona.

    Ranching and tourism took over the area, when the gold and silver panned out. In the 1920's and 1930's, dude ranches started popping up in Wickenburg. These dude ranches offered cookouts, trail rides, and hayrides.

    Today, several dude ranches are found on the outskirts of town. These ranches offer horseback riding, great food, swimming, and many more special amenities. Wickenburg continues to keep the old west feeling alive.

    Although Wickenburg sits at the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert and boasts a colorful history. The town gives its residents the comforts of city living.     Wickenburg is in Central Arizona . It is in Maricopa County Maricopa County. The town is located on intersection of U.S. Highway 60 and 93. The town sits at the base of the Bradshaw Mountains on the banks of the Hassayampa River. If you are coming from Tucson or Phoenix take Interstate 17 north out of town. When you get just north of Phoenix you will take State Highway 74 west past Lake Pleasant. The highway will dead-end into U.S. Highway 60, where you will take it north on up to Wickenburg. Wickenburg is 58 miles north of Phoenix. If you are coming from Flagstaff and would like to take a scenic route to Wickenburg, you will take Highway 89A south out of town. You will pass through Sedona, Cottonwood and into Prescott. Once in Prescott take Highway 89 southwest out of town passing through Peeples Valley. When Highway 89 meets State Highway 93 take it south to Wickenburg.

    The most popular attraction in Wickenburg is the Desert Caballeros Western Museum. This museum has something for everyone. The highlight of the museum has to be the Western art from famous artists such as Remington and Russell.
