Litchfield Park is a planned residential community, 16 miles west of central Phoenix. It is a unique suburban community boasting a small town atmosphere and casual lifestyle. Litchfield Park is just north of Interstate 10 with easy access to metropolitan Phoenix. It was incorporated in 1987.

Litchfield Park started in 1916 when Goodyear Tire and Rubber bought farmland to grow Egyptian long-staple cotton to use in tire cords. This project was developed by Paul Litchfield, then a junior executive with Goodyear. The company town was given his name in 1926. Litchfield Park was headquarters for Goodyear Farms, which had thousands of acres under cultivation. From 1931 to 1944, it was also the test site for Goodyear auto, truck and tractor tires. In the 1960’s, Litchfield Park designed a master-plan for development including
several self-sufficient villages. Positive aspects of the village concept can still be seen today.

The Wigwam resort hotel, a five-star establishment, is a highlight of Litchfield Park. It was originally built for Goodyear executives visiting the farming operations. In 1929, the Wigwam opened to the public and soon became a fashionable and exclusive resort. The Wigwam provides some 700 jobs to the
local economy.

Litchfield Park is a small but affluent suburb that is located just north of Phoenix in Maricopa County. As part of the Phoenix metropolitan area, the city was not founded until 1964. It was named after an executive at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Paul Weeks Litchfield, who came to the Phoenix area in 1916 to look for land on which to grow cotton.

It has a population of almost 5500 people. Its population continues to grow and has increased by 1600 people in the last decade.

Boundaries

A small suburb of Phoenix, Litchfield Park only spans 3.32 miles. Its northern boundary reaches up to West Missouri Avenue while its easternmost border touches North 172nd Avenue.

The south of Litchfield Park spans to West Indian School Road. Its western edge spans to Luna Road West.

Litchfield Park encompasses the Wigwam Golf Club and Terra Verde Lake Park. It is served by the Phoenix Goodyear Airport. It has a downtown center called Tierra Verde located on Wigwam Boulevard and Old Litchfield Road.

Freeway Access

The city of Litchfield Park itself does not have any major thoroughfares that run through it. Still, drivers from this city can take several city streets to connect to nearby highways and interstates.

Specifically, they can take West Camelback Road west to connect with Highway 303. They can take the same road east to connect to Highway 101. West Indian School Road runs into Highway 303 to the west and Highway 101 to the east.

To reach I-10, Litchfield Park drivers need south on North Dyart Road. They can also take North Litchfield Road south to I-10.

Communities

Despite being a small town, Litchfield Park has 13 residential communities. These include Village at Litchfield Park, a single-family home neighborhood that is near the White Tank Mountains and the Peoria Sports Complex.

La Casa Linda is a condominium community that have two-car garages and private patios and balconies. The condos there sell for around $250,000 and higher.

Litchfield Greens is another community in this town. It offers primarily single-family homes for sale and is an exclusive gated neighborhood with newer three and four-bedroom homes.

Goodyear is home to Rubbermaid, Inc., Loral Defense Systems
and the Lufthansa German Airlines Pilot School. Palo Verde
Nuclear Generating Station is 30 miles away and provides additional
job opportunities.

White Tanks Regional Park is located west of Litchfield Park. It is
named for natural rock water tanks once used by local Indians.
Many unusual petroglyphs or rock carvings are found in the
26,000-acre park. Estrella Mountain Regional Park to the south,
has 19,000 acres with an 18-hole golf course, as well as camping,
horseback riding, hiking and picnic facilities. The Wildlife
World Zoo, located four miles northwest of Litchfield Park, pro-vides
a natural habitat for many endangered species.
Nearby Desert Sky Pavilion has seating for 18,000 with
about 50 major shows each year. Phoenix International Raceway
hosts major auto races including Indy cars in March and NASCAR
in October. Phoenix also has a symphony, many theater groups,
a host of museums, professional football, basketball and base-ball,
and a wide range of popular entertainment.
