The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company discovered that land just west of Phoenix was best suited for farming the Egyptian long-staple cotton needed to make tire cords, balloons and airplane fabric. So, in 1916 the company bought large sections of land where Goodyear is today.
The company was also in the process of buying the land around Litchfield Park. The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company was having difficulty getting the long-staple cotton, due to a Germany blockade during World War I. So they decided to grow their own cotton to meet their needs.
When World War II began, the company decided to use Goodyear to build an aircraft production facility. Housing was also created for the workers in the plant. The Goodyear facility was located near the Litchfield Naval Airfield. The facility’s focus was on the construction of flight decks for navy seaplanes. Production later spread to radar and guided missile parts.
In 1946, the town was incorporated and the town has continued to expand. The Goodyear Aerospace plant was sold to Loral Defense Systems. As time has gone on, much of Goodyear’s growth has centered around the Phoenix-Goodyear Municipal Airport. The airport is a base for aviation industries.
