There is one attraction that will end up being one of the highlights of your visit. Delgadillo’s Snow Cap is a place that you just must stop in to see. The Snow Cap has been around since Route 66 came through town. It appears to be just a wild little snack shop in the middle of the valley, but I assure you it is much more than that. Take my word for it. Everyone loves to stop in for a bite.

There are outdoor activities near town. Just outside of Seligman is a unique outdoor spot that you will enjoy visiting. The Grand Canyon Caverns offers a tour that will take you back in time. Here, you will see what the earth is like 21 stories below. Seligman is known for being a stop along Route 66. Route 66 is one of the most famous roads in America. You will learn a lot about the original Route 66 and of course you will want to take a spin down the old highway. There are several businesses in Seligman that cater to those interested in the nostalgia of the “Mother Road.”

Seligman has gone through several name changes. In the beginning, the area was known as Mint Valley. It was the valley where the pioneers on the Beale Wagon Road passed through in the mid 1800’s.
Later, the town was called Prescott Junction. In 1886, Tom Bullock arrived in the area and convinced the residents in Prescott to gather money together to build a railroad line. The line connected Prescott to the Atlantic and Pacific main line, where Seligman is today. They called that point, Prescott Junction.

Bullock was charged to build the rail connecting these points by a designated date. This deal soon became a hot topic in Prescott. Many people began taking bets on whether Bullock could get the task done in time. He did meet the deadline and the rail was used by two steam engines. At first, the train had to run backwards back to Prescott Junction because there wasn’t a turntable in Prescott.

The first post office was established in the same year the line was constructed. When the Prescott and Central Arizona Railroad went out of business, the rail between Prescott and Prescott Junction shut down too. It was at this time that Prescott Junction changed its name to Seligman. The name Seligman came from two brothers, who were part owners in the Aztec Land and Cattle Company. The Seligman brothers most importantly owned stock in the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. In the late 1890’s, the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad became the Santa Fe Railroad. The railroad also moved its roundhouse to Seligman.

During the late 1920’s, the automobile became a popular means of transportation. Route 66 was constructed which connected Chicago to California. The road made Seligman a place where drivers stopped over for the night. Throughout the years, Route 66 was a boost to the town’s economy.

Seligman started to slow down in the late 1970’s and mid 1980’s. It was during this time, that Interstate 40 replaced Route 66 and bypassed the town, coupled with the Santa Fe Railroad closing down its operations.
Seligman continues to relive its past. The town has worked hard to preserve the nostalgia of Route 66. In 1987, the State of Arizona dedicated Route 66 from Seligman to Kingman. This stretch of road is the longest remaining stretch of the original highway. The preservation of the past is evident in town with many businesses catering to Historic Route 66 buffs. The town is unincorporated.

It is in Yuma County. The town is located on Interstate 8 in the southwest corner of the state. It is on the border of Arizona and California, along the Colorado River.

If you are coming from Phoenix, you take Interstate 10 west to State Highway 85. Then head south on State Highway 85, until it meets Interstate 8. Travel west on Interstate 8 to Yuma. If you are coming from Parker or http://www.Arizonan.com/LakeHavasu/, take Highway 95 out of town and head south until you come to Yuma. Yuma is unique town. It’s location near the Mexican border and Colorado River offers entertainment. The town is also rich in history. The land around Yuma is fertile. There are over 200,000 acres harvested a year. Broccoli, lettuce and cantaloupe are the most common crops planted.

Yuma is also new home to military personnel.

The Marine Corps Air Station has 5,000 individuals training and working. The Yuma Proving Grounds has all branches of the military conducting research testing.

Today, Yuma’s population is 65,000. The town sits at an elevation of 200 feet. The climate is cool in the winter with lows around 36 degrees and Temperate in the summer with highs around 106 degrees. The town does receive annual precipitation of close to 3 inches. There are numerous outdoor activities in and around Yuma that will interest water enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The Yuman Indians chose the name for Yuma. History has it that the Yuman Indians built fires, in the belief that rain would come to the area. The word uma means fire, thus the name Yuma. Yuma’s history began with the Indian tribes that inhabited the area first. It wasn’t until 1540, when the Spanish explorer Hernando de Alarcon became the first white man to visit the area.

The town site was under Spanish rule from that time until 1854. The Gadsen Purchase caused Yuma to become a part of the United States. Fort Yuma was built during the Gold Rush, in 1849. The fort insured a safe southern travel route to California and brought peace to the area. In 1854, the town was established as Colorado City, but later the name changed to Arizona City in 1871. Not long afterward, the name was changed again this time to Yuma, 1873. Today it is the county seat. There are many attractions that you will want to go see when you are in Yuma. The Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park and the Yuma Crossing State Historic Park are both spots that are filled with history. You will see what life was like when Yuma was just beginning to become a town. The Fort Yuma Quechan Museum is another place you will learn about the Indians that lived in the area long ago. Yuma has a host of outdoor activities to choose from during your visit.

There are two refuges that are just outside of town. The Imperial National Wildlife Refuge and the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge have a variety of wildlife that will amaze visitors. Betty’s Kitchen is an area for hikers and fishermen. It is a lovely location for a relaxing day near the Colorado River. Yuma has one high school district. The Yuma Unified High School District 70 is at 3150 Avenue A or you may call 520-726-1731. Yuma is pleased to have a Junior College in town. Arizona Western College offers a two-year Associate Degree of Arts and Applied Science, along with vocational certificates. The town also offers classes from Northern Arizona University. This program is for both undergraduates and graduates. Yuma Regional Medical Center offers care from family practice to neurosurgery. The hospital has 257 beds with over 120 physicians available. The Center provides convalescent, hospice, emergency, day care and senior citizen services for the area. Yuma has many specialists that can help from dentists, osteopaths to surgeons. You will find every major religion represented in town. There are nine parks, seven athletic fields and seven recreation centers in the Yuma area. Carver Pool at 5th Street and 13th Avenue or Kennedy Pool at 24th Street and Kennedy Lane or Marcus Pool at 5th Street and 5th Avenue are the three swimming pools that serve Yuma. Yuma has 13 diverse and challenging golf courses. The following is a short list of just a few of the courses that you might enjoy.The Mesa Del Sol golf Course is located at 12213 Calle Del Cid. It is an 18-hole championship course.

The Desert Hills Municipal golf Course has been rated top in the state. It has 18-hole championship layout. The course also provides a driving range and a pro shop. Arroyo Dunes golf Course is located at 32nd Street and Avenue A. It is an 18-hole course with a driving range and a pro shop. Outside of Yuma in Somerton, there is the Dove Valley Public golf Course. It is at 220 North Marshall Loop Road. This course has 18 holes along with a driving range, pro shop and food services. The airport hosts a travel agency, gift shop, restaurant, parking and delivery services. United Express has flights to and from Los Angeles and America West Express has flights to and from Phoenix. Rental car agencies are also available at the airport. For more information, call 520-726-6640. The town does not have public transportation, but taxis are available. When crossing the border into Mexican there are some things to keep in mind. For U.S. citizens, passports are not required for visits less than 72 hours within 75 miles of the border. Individuals under 18 years, who are not accompanied by a parent, must have a signed consent affidavit signed by both parents. If traveling with one parent, signed affidavit is required from the absent parent. Pets are usually allowed with verification of rabies vaccine within the last 6 months. American citizens/residents must declare citizenship and purchases when re-entering the United States. Purchases up to $400 per person are duty free, so is one quart of liquor and one carton of cigarettes.

Any purchases over $400 will be taxed. When driving into Mexican, the Mexican authorities will issue a temporary vehicle permit. The owner or lessee must be in the vehicle and be prepared to present the following: appropriate immigration form, certificate of title, vehicle registration, rental leasing form or bill of sale, proof of employment (if driving company car), valid driver’s license (outside of Mexican) and an international credit card. It is strongly recommended that Mexican Auto Insurance be purchased before entering Mexican. This insurance can be purchased in Yuma or at the Mexican border. Wickenburg is located on the northern edge of the valley. Technically, the town is not part of the Valley of the Sun. However, with the growth and expansion of the Phoenix area, Wickenburg is no longer too far from the capital city. Residents of Wickenburg take State Highway 93 (Grand Avenue), which travels northwest diagonally out of metropolitan Phoenix and drops off in the town of Wickenburg. This route is a quick way to get to and from metropolitan Phoenix.

Wickenburg is located alongside the Hassayampa River, which means “river that flows upside down.” The Native Americans living in the area gave the river its name, due to the fact that the river actually flows 20 feet below the surface for most of its 100 mile course through the desert, including parts of Wickenburg. Wickenburg History

the town’s history began back in 1863. Henry Wickenburg, a German immigrant came to the area and discovered gold. This discovery eventually became the Vulture Mine, the most profitable gold and silver mine in Arizona.

Ranching and tourism took over the area, when the gold and silver panned out. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, dude ranches started popping up in Wickenburg. These dude ranches offered cookouts, trail rides, and hayrides.

Today, several dude ranches are found on the outskirts of town. These ranches offer horseback riding, great food, swimming, and many more special amenities. Wickenburg continues to keep the old west feeling alive.

You will pass through Sedona, Cottonwood and into Prescott. Once in Prescott take Highway 89 southwest out of town passing through Peeples Valley. When Highway 89 meets State Highway 93 take it south to Wickenburg.

the towns layout can be traced back to the late1960s, when Charles Wood Jr. was hired by Robert McCulloch of McCulloch Properties. Mr. Wood is known for his work in Anaheim, California on the design of Disneyland. He helped plan and create the design of Fountain Hills. History
In 1960, Robert P. McCulloch purchased 4,500 acres of land northeast of Scottsdale. The land was once a cattle ranch and was a part of the largest land and cattle holdings in Arizona . McCulloch decided to change the cattle land into a community. Charles Wood Jr. joined McCulloch in making the community a reality. Wood was the designer of Disneyland and had worked with McCulloch in building Lake Havasu City along the Colorado River in Arizona .
It was McCulloch who wanted to have a memorable landmark for the community. It was this landmark from which the town got its name.

the landmark became the world’s tallest fountain. A 32-acre park surrounds the fountain. which uses reclaimed irrigation water. A stream of water shoots 560 feet into the air above a man made lake every 15 minutes from 10:00 to 9:00 daily. The creators of the fountain decided to use reclaimed irrigation water. The fountain was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. The fountain is almost three times higher than Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park.

By 1971, McCulloch had acquired 12,000 acres and many people came to the community to buy land. Fountain Hills was incorporated in 1989. During the early 1990’s, Fountain Hills was rated on of the fifty best places to raise a family. One of the best characteristics of the town is the spectacular views and fresh air coupled with the proximity of the city life in Phoenix. The town continues to grow, although Indian Reservations, a park and a mountain range place a restriction on how
far the town can stretch.

The mineshaft was on a sixty-degree angle and about every ten feet a layer of mesquite logs four feet long and three feet wide were placed to serve as rest stations for the men carrying the ore. The miners had rawhide buckets strapped to their backs to carry up the rock.

Unfortunately, it was abandoned due to Indian raids. Then in 1847, the first American set up his mine in the Ajo area. Tom Childs came upon a deserted mine and found high-grade native copper.

Ajo became the first copper mine in Arizona . Then the Ajo Copper Company organized in 1854. During this time pack mules carried the ore to Yuma, where it was shipped down the Colorado River. Then it was sent on by boat around the Cape Horn to Swansea, Wales for smelting. However, Ajo did not flourish. The mining town remained relatively unnoticed, until the beginning of the 1900’s. The reason for its sudden popularity was the development of new home ore-refining techniques, which made mining in Ajo much easier and more profitable. One of the first companies in Ajo was the new home Cornelia Copper Company.

John Campbell Greenway started the company, along with some partners. The mine was named after one of the partner’s wives. Eventually, the town began to prosper.
A downtown plaza was built in 1917. The plaza reveals the Spanish architecture that has influenced the town, due to its proximity to the Mexican border. Then in 1931, the company was sold to Phelps Dodge. The company had over 1,000 men working in the mine, until 1986 when it closed down. Phelps Dodge sold many of its new homes in town to retirees.

Today you will find the town is a prefect retirement spot. As for the name of the town, it is hard to pinpoint. Some say it is from the Spanish word garlic, which Mexican miners found in the area. Others say it came from the Papago Indian word for paint, because this was the area the Indians collected copper minerals to make the paint for their bodies.
