Having moved to the Valley in 1982, I have lived and worked in many parts of Phoenixarea. I have the knowledge and experience that you need to make the best choice in selecting your new Phoenix home. The capital city of Arizonais Phoenix with 1.4 million people. It is the heart of the Valley of the Sun. Phoenix has been ranked one of the top 10 cities in the nation to relocate or start a business. Many people are drawn to the city because of work. The Greater Phoenix area is one of the top metro areas for jobs, based on both percentage increase and the real increase in number of jobs. This growth has made Phoenixthe sixth largest city in the country. Phoenix has become a new business hot spot.
On the north end of the Valley of the Sun is Fountain Hills,Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Carefree, and Cave Creek. Scottsdale is known for its one-of-a-kind shops, restaurants, and hotels. The city of Scottsdale is ranked the sixth largest city in the state with 226,000 residents. TheNorth Valley has spectacular desert vistas and mountain views.
Gilbert, Chandler, Mesa, Queen Creek, Maricopa, Apache Junction, and Tempe flank the capital to the east. Four of these cities are ranked in the top ten in population for the state. Tempe is home to Arizona StateUniversity, which is named one of the top ten largest universities in the United States. The East Valleyprovides residents with cultural attractions and festivals.
Buckeye, Surprise, Gila Bend, Avondale, Sun City, Peoria, Glendale, Litchfield Park, Youngtown, Goodyear, and El Mirage are to the west of Phoenix. The city of Peoria has 138,000 residents and Glendalehas a population of 239,000. Cities in the West Valley offer universities, professional sports stadiums, and entertainment venues.
As a newcomer it can be difficult to visualize the Phoenix area. The Valley of the Sun is a desert metropolis in the approximate center of the Salt RiverValley in Maricopa County. The valley is roughly an oval shape, stretching 80 miles to the east and 40 miles to the north and south. Circling the Valley of the Sun is a sprinkling of mountains. The McDowell Mountainsand Superstition Mountainsto the east, the world’s largest city park including SouthMountain to the south, Matazal Mountainsrise in the northeast, and dotted in the middle of the Valley are Camelback Mountainand Piestewa Peak. These mountains provide the Valley of the Sun with a spectacular scenic backdrop.
When traveling in the Phoenixarea, it is not uncommon to discover that you have ventured into another city. Many residents live in one city, yet drive to another to work. Phoenix area streets are very easy to navigate. The streets form an orderly grid along the desert valley floor. Numbered streets run north and south, intersected by named streets going east and west. The axis is formed by Washington Street, which divides the city north and south and Central Avenue, which separates the east and west sections. All avenues run west of Central and all streets run east.
