History:
In 1699, this was the site of a Visita. It was a mission that was not visited often by Spanish padres. After time, the Visita closed.
Later, the area around Sonoita became a ranching region. It is believed that as many as 3,000 head of cattle grazed these hills during the 1800's. Cattle were then shipped from the ranches by railroad.
In the beginning, cattle ranching proved to be very a tough life. The Indians did not want the settlers on their land and many times the ranches were attacked.
Today, ranching is a strong economic base for the community. It is said that there are families dating back five generations still ranching here. The town's gorgeous landscape has been used in several movies and television shows such as "Tin Cup," "The Young Guns," and "The Young Riders."
