History:
The town of San Manuel began somewhat recently, compared to most mining towns in Arizona . In 1944, the Magma Copper Company bought all of the existing mining claims in the surrounding area around where San Manuel is today.
The company began a project that consisted of exploration and development. This project resulted in the present day mine, mill, smelter, refinery and community known as San Manuel. The name San Manuel came from an old mine claim and patron saint of one of the early prospectors.
The mine is capable of producing approximately 300,000 tons of copper each year. There are two smelter stacks that are visible from the roadside today. The tallest stack is 555 feet.
Due to the remote location of the mine, the company was forced to build housing for the mine's employees. The housing construction began in 1952. Eventually, the town was opened for private new home ownership and new home real estate development. Today, San Manuel is completely privately owned.
