History
Early settlers discovered a fertile valley near the Queen Creek Wash at the base of the San Tan Mountains. The valley was perfect for ranching and farming. Farmers discovered it was ideal for growing citrus, cotton, pecans, vegetables and other crops.

Queen Creek Wash received its name from the Silver Queen mine in the town of Superior located just east of where the town of Queen Creek is today. At the base of the mine was a creek known as the Picket Post Creek. The creek’s name was changed to Queen Creek in honor of the new mine. The creek passes through the mountains and into the area that is now Queen Creek.

In the beginning however, the town was called Rittenhouse because of the railroad spur that was located at Rittenhouse and Ellsworth roads. Rittenhouse is the name of one of the founding families. Many of the town’s roads are named after the first families arriving to the area to make it their home. Some of these road names are still used today. It was at this railroad spur that many people would hail down the train to catch a ride into Phoenix. When the rail stop ceased and the community grew, the name changed to Queen Creek.

Queen Creek experienced a short growth spurt in the 1920’s, when immigrants from Mexico arrived to pick the local cotton. In 1989, Queen Creek was incorporated. Soon after the town’s incorporation, Williams Air Force Base was closed and was converted into Williams Gateway Airport. Other businesses like General Motors Desert Proving Grounds have come to Queen Creek to seek their success.

Today the town’s goal is to preserve its small town friendly atmosphere by guiding growth. Plans are to achieve a family-oriented community with room to grow. Queen Creek will continue to provide open space, along with a country charm.
