Lakeside has so many outdoor activities. Rainbow Lake is practically right in town. This 90-acre lake has a boat ramp, camping, restrooms and lots of parking.
This lake is private property, so please be respectful. The lake has bass, trout, catfish and bluegill. Bald eagles can sometimes be spotted in the area during the winter months. Woodland Lake Park is a great place to bird watch. The park is located right down the road in Pinetop. The small 28-acre lake has picnic tables, grills, armadas and restrooms. There is also a boat launch available with good fishing.
Show Low Lake is just north of town and has a 75-site campground. This is a terrific family spot with something for everyone. Fishing is popular pastime at this 100-acre lake. Springtime is the best time to try your hand at catching a trout. You will also discover shoreline fishing is better here than at most lakes. If water fun is not your interest, don’t worry there is more. A 180-mile White Mountain Trail System winds its way throughout the forest surrounding the town. If you would like to find out more about the variety of trails available for hiking and horses, then you will want to stop in at the Pinetop-Lakeside Chamber of Commerce or a ranger station.
History:
Mormons founded the town of Lakeside in 1880. The town was originally named Fairview and then Woodland. In 1890, the residents dammed up Showlow Creek and created Rainbow Lake. After that, the name was changed to Lakeside. The name was most fitting with the development of the new lake and in combination with the others, which surround the town.
In the early years, the town was chiefly devoted to stock raising, though some vegetables, barley and alfalfa were grown. Soon tourists discovered the town and it became a popular vacation spot. There is fishing, camping, hiking and skiing. There is something for everyone.
The town of Pinetop was located so close to Lakeside that eventually the two merged into one. Even the two town’s names combined into one called Pinetop-Lakeside. The two towns were incorporated together in 1984.
