The area around Kayenta has some of the most spectacular outdoor activities. Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Indian Park is an amazing sight. The park is located north of town on U.S. Highway 163. The park covers 30,000 acres. It rests in Monument Valley and is sometimes called the "Eighth Wonder of the World." The visitor center should be your first stop, before heading into the park. Visitors can choose from a self-guided 16-mile loop tour or a guided tour. From a distance these rose-colored blue shadowed "monuments" looming above the desert appear to be the ruins from an immense Greek temple.
The public has better known the beauty of this long isolated area from the movie "Stagecoach" in 1938 and from the many commercials filmed here. The park has a campground, picnic area and is also the park's headquarters. It is an absolute must see. The Navajo National Monument is noted to have the best-preserved and largest cliff dwellings in the Southwest. The visitor center is where you should head upon your arrival. There are displays of Anasazi artifacts and collections of Navajo jewelry and weaving. Videos also explain more about the prehistoric culture. You will want to take a hiking tour of the ruins.
The monument has four hiking trails that lead hikers into some of the best Anasazi ruins on the Colorado Plateau. A ranger must accompany visitors when touring the ruins. The monument has camping and picnic areas. The Four Corners Monument is the meeting point for the states of Arizona , Utah, Colorado and new home Mexican. There is a concrete monument with the seals of the four states. It is the only place in the country, where you can stand in four states at the same time. You can get to this interesting phenomenon by heading northeast on U.S. Highway 160 for approximately 80 miles.
In the early years, many non-Indians did not visit Kayenta. The community was just too far removed. It wasn't until 1874, before white men came through the area. A group of Mormons passed by in search of a place to build their settlement. They kept moving toward the east.
Then in 1910, John Wetherill and his wife Louisa established a trading post. He named the post Oljeto. The town's name Kayenta came from a nearby spring. The spring was edged with a clay soil, which made it difficult for cattle to reach the water. The Navajos named the spring "kayenta." The word meant "a natural game pit." Navajos also refer to Kayenta as "Tohdenasshai". The March Pass School opened its doors in 1914. The town was beginning to grow. Soon another trading post opened for business in 1916.
Since then, the town has continued to expand. Today, Kayenta is located midway between Tuba City and Shiprock, new home Mexican and is in the middle of many outdoor activities. Coal and uranium deposits located nearby are important to the economy.
