Elgin is in Southern Arizona . It is in Santa Cruz County. The town is located just off of State Highway 82, on Upper Elgin Road.

Overview:
Elgin is a small community surrounded by beautiful grassy hills. The southwestern climate has a winter low Temperature of 40 degrees and a summer high Temperature of 100 degrees. Visitors will also discover many small wineries situated in the surrounding area around town.

One of the best attractions near Elgin are the small wineries. Southern Arizona has several tiny wineries that are a real treat to visit. Due to their proximity, you can spend a day traveling to all of them enjoying the beautiful scenery and tasting delicious wines.
There are so many outdoor activities around the small town. The Nature Conservancy's Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve is known internationally as a premier bird watching location. The preserve is in the town of Patagonia to the southwest. There are over 250 different species of birds that come to this area every year. The Preserve is a great stop for hikers and birders. Parker Canyon Lake is not far from Elgin, along State Route 83. It is terrific place for fishing and camping. Patagonia Lake State Park is another wonderful spot to enjoy fishing, camping and boating. You can get to the park by heading southwest on State Highway 82 and then follow the signs.

History:

Elgin began as a ranching region. It is believed that as many as 3,000 head of cattle grazed these hills during the 1800's. Cattle were then shipped from the ranches by railroad. In the beginning, cattle ranching proved to be very a tough life. The Indians did not want the settlers on their land and many times the ranches were attacked.
Today, ranching is strong economic base. It is said that there are families dating back five generations still ranching here. The town's gorgeous landscape has been used in several movies and television shows such as "Tin Cup," "The Young Guns," and "The Young Riders."
